Snakes! Just the word instantly brings to mind slithering fear and disgust in most people. Certainly it does in me! My son recently encountered a large venemous snake in our own backyard. He didn’t see it until it was almost too late. It struck at him, but by God’s grace the snake missed him and he escaped harm. That snake is now dead, but it leaves me wondering about the other “snakes” that sneak up on us and sit quietly among us, waiting to strike into our lives. Deadly and silent, we often don’t even know they are there until it is too late.
In the very beginning, our enemy took the physical form of a snake. Perhaps this explains our inherent dislike and fear of them to this day. Our enemy is just as real today, and though we can’t see him, we can certainly see his effects of destruction and demolition in our lives. He slinks in quietly and sits and waits for us to be vulnerable. He knows our weaknesses and knows when to strike sometimes with deadly force, sometimes, just enough to infect us with a deadly venom that will fester and slowly invade every aspect of our lives. Pride, anger, jealousy, selfishness, apathy. These are just a few of the deadly snakes lying in wait for us if we are not careful and aware. Unfortunately, they are not always so obvious and easy to discern in the beginning. In fact, they may seem harmless, but we can never underestimate them and their ability to destroy.
But we can not only escape unharmed, we already have complete victory in Christ Jesus! He has already won the war and the outcome is certain, though the battle is still being fought. So how do we fight such a vicious, venemous enemy? First we must recognize our enemy for the liar and serpent he is. We must rely on the strength of our Almighty Father and use the powerful weapons He has given us. We must give our Savior complete control of our lives and let go of our pride. God alone must direct our path, and only then can we avoid the serpents along the way, with complete trust and obedience in Him. He is our refuge, our strength, and our very present help in times of trouble! He is not only our snake repellent against future attacks, but our unwavering trust in Him and His Word brings life and healing from past and current attacks!
Our enemy is not always so obvious today to slither up and announce his wicked plans and he can take on many deceptive forms. He will whisper lies to us and try and lead us astray. Whether he tries to lead us into sin or keep us from fulfilling our purpose, every lie is just that, a lie! “Everyone’s doing it” “it will be fun” or “You’re not worthy” “You can’t do it” These can be just as deadly as an outright bite!
LORD, give us wisdom to see every lie for exactly what it is, a lie. Give us discernment to know the danger and escape unharmed when we are threatened by thoughts and actions that would lead us away from You and the plan You have for our lives. Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting! (Psalm 139:23-24) Uncover my sin, LORD, like a snake hiding under a rock, and lead me in the path of victory!
